best mechwarrior game?

I'm not a battletech nerd, the only mech game i've played was mech2 and I recently reinstalled it after not playing it since it came out in the 90s. I got interested in reinstalling after reading some of the battletech novels recently (legend of the jade phoenix) so I'd like to ask, which mech game do you find the best? From what I gather mech 2 seems the coolest but mw online looks promising.

Heh, well generally you ask that question on here most of us would say what you just said and that MechWarrior 2 is the best.
MW3 had a good story though I will give it that.

MW1 I did not like much.... probably because i did not play it till 5 years or so ago.

But yeah regarding novels you may like the Blood of Kerensky Trilogy. It is one of my favorites!

what I want to know is, what sets mw2 apart from the rest..? what makes it a better game despite it's age..? I play many old games which i consider to be better than it's successors but in the mw universe I have no familiarity.

Well, the following things in my opinion set the game apart from the rest.

1. A Written storyline that for the most part ties into the Battletech stories.
2. Clan based story line.
3. A Multiplayer which is fast paced and brutal.
4. Jumpjets that have more than one direction.
5. Elementals
6. Custom Made mechs with no hardpoints unlike MW4.
7. The game was attempting to stay true to the Battletech board game.
8. (If I might add a few more from MW2 Mercs....)
   Near Unlimited ability to add new mechs to the game.
9. Decent ability to make maps.
10. The NARC System.
11. The Nuke.
12. 3d sound system

Admittedly there are things I hate about the game such as Gauss rifles being useless and some other weapons that are unused, but beyond that for a game of the time it was unique.
Despite that I have a fondness to the game.

Personally I am a fan of mech warrior 2: mercs 1.1 above all other releases, I bought a PowerVR for my p166 and i could not get it to work with any other game, but I didnt care it worked for MW2:mercs so who cared.

Recently I tried to get it to work on my XP x32 reinstalled on my dx 10.1 card dual core system and unfortunately no matter what I try I get a tone of the textures stretched from the top left to their position in d3d mode, I tried pretty much everything, with my titanium edition version of mercs, changing the version of direct x from 5-10, changing drivers makes no difference either, I'm lost, 1.1 patched to d3d but rendered in software runs horrible so im left with thevanilla mw2: mercs graphics which is pretty grotty...unless i get some cheap computer set up im lost, I think it just too high ends or soemthing. (yes I used hook & other variants & trauled this forum, tho if i missed something please advise)

I tried Mw4:mercs, but it just not the same somehow, the rpg-like mechbay, comstar terminal, office area, etc it all adds atmosphere to the game, and the newer releases seem to be lacking this.

Crysis Wars: Mechwarrior Living legends looks like its going to smash all that tho will be live on that in a week or so, so hopefully I got the fix coming http://www.desura.com/mods/mechwarrior-living-legends

I like MW 2 mercs the best, too.

The clans are interesting but I like the IS equipment better in many ways and it's much more interesting to only get the clan tech in bits and pieces, plus to have choices in your missions is very underrated. Usually I skip that dumb iceberg mission for example.
