Can't run on Dosbox, VMware Fusion, or anything...

Post by RL_Nice »

So I created an image file and mounted it, but when I type in "_MINST" but all I get is an illegal command "win". I tried installing it via "minst" directly into Vista and then running it through Dosbox (I don't even know if I'm supposed to), but I get a "This program cannot be run in Dos mode". I also tried every patch I could find to see if I could run the game directly from Vista, but neither patch could find any game installations to install to.

I'm actually running a MacBook Pro with Windows Vista installed via Boot Camp, and I have Dosbox on both partitions.

I've even gone so far as to try installing a hard-obtained copy of Windows 98 and installing it on VMware Fusion only to find that Win98 on VMware lacks the Direct3D needed to run the game.

In short, is there any damn way for me to run Mechwarrior 2 on this computer?

Never mind, I just found MechVM on this very site and it works beautifully (with the exception of some sound issues)!

You were on the right track with the MINST.. simply run that in dosbox and you can install it.. _MINST is the 95 version.

Well... would there be any way to give Win98 VMWare the juice it needs to run Mech2?

Would installing Windows 95 on VMware work better than Win98?

vmware will work fine on most high end comps for mech2 95.
The 98 version is probably the best to work with in all cases.

I already had Windows 98 VMware'd onto my computer, but Mech2 didn't run. I did a bit of searching on Google and assumed that VMware didn't support Direct3D for Win98. I really have no idea, though.

I guess I can download a trial of VM Workstation to my Vista partition and give it a try. I'll probably run into a disc space problem since I didn't allocate that much to it when I installed Boot Camp, though.

I just tried VMware Workstation and I'm still having the same problem.

You are trying to run the 95 version correct and not the DOS?
Because DOS will not work on that period.

Also you did try DOSBOX for the DOS mech2 on the mac side correct?

If none of those solutions work for you I have no idea what could be the problem.
So long as you are not running a 3d enhanced version you should be having no problems at all...

I don't have the DOS version it seems, and I think the VMware issue is not with Mechwarrior 2, but with the virtual machine itself. I tried running the first Red Alert (which ran perfectly fine on DOSBox) on it as well, and it didn't work.

Maybe I should have ordered that copy off of eBay that you linked to.

Okay, I just tried running it on Virtual PC and it works (sort of). I'd still like to figure out how to do it on VMware so I can play without having to switch to my Windows partition, but I'll save that for the VMware forums.

Good to hear you have it partially working...
and yes I agree you should buy the DOS version. You would be having a much easier time.
