Is there any, at least theoretical, way to run this version without the hardware for which it was originally intended? I read that there used to be a driver called a "VESA" that acted as an "interpreter" between the game and whatever video card was plugged into the motherboard. Isn't it at least possible to write something like that for modern Windows OS's and hardware?

As for the hypothesis, the following is as far as my knowledge goes:
- Mechwarrior 2: ATI 3D Rage Edition was written to communicate an expanded amount of information to ATI's 3D Rage video card, if present
- Windows 95 is the only OS fully capable of understanding MW2: 3D Rage Edition

Given the above, some kind of "VESA" driver could be written to enable communication between this edition of MW2: 31st Cent. Combat and other video cards. Furthermore, if such a driver is ever written, it shouldn't be too difficult to get XP to understand the game, right? Or is there too much information lacking?

Someone would have to be very dedicated to such a project.
It took several years just for someone to create a 3dfx emulator.

Everything is always theoretically possible, but actually doing something like that is a completely different matter.

It is much easier for someone to just buy a card stick it in the machine and run it on XP. That is the only realistic option.
It only costs $15.

That's what I thought. Meanwhile, I have the Rage Edition and a machine that runs it (somewhat mediocre).

after a long time playing and messing around I have found out a way to fix this problem with ati.
1. go here http://www.warp13.co.uk/mech2
2. download the first (MW2Hook) and last (v3 patch) to your computer
3. then go to fileshack and get the patch they have
4. run the fileshack patch then the v3 patch
5. run the MW2Hook patch (make sure it finds the game)
6.a shortcut should pop up on your desktop and run that

The game should work but I have a feeling I left something out its been a long day trying to fix this and now netmech needs fixed. But IT IS ALL WORTH IT!!! :D
