Hook Tutorial

I'm sorry guys, but I need some serious help here.
I'm trying to run MW2 Mercs on a Gateway with an AMD 64x2, 3GB DDR RAM, running Vista.
I use DOSBOX for some other old games and found MW2Mercs the other day and would love to play it.

I tried installing with Win95 comp mode and I get a fail to load file error (which I reported elsewhere). It was then suggested that I use the HOOK, so I dl'd it and ran setup. I let it set up in it's default directory, and it said it detected no game installs on my machine (MW2M is installed), so I tried running inject. No results. Tried installing HOOK into the Mercenaries file. No results. Trying to run the program at any point along the way gives me a black 2sec screen and then I'm back at my desktop.

Am I using the hook right? There's no read-me and I can't find any directions/guide/how-to by searching the forums. I started this thread thinking maybe if someone could explain how to use the hook it would solve my problems and the problems of any other new-comers such as myself.


P.S. My MW2M CD is v. 1.05 and says "MS-DOS WINDOWS 95" and "CD2-3580-101-U3" on it. This made me think it might have the dos version on it too, so I tried installing through DOS BOX but must be missing something because everything came back as an illegal command or "windows file" when I accessed the CD's DIR and started trying exe's etc. Maybe I'm missing something here...I'm not the best with DOS BOX though it works for my other games (Wing Commander, PRIVATEER, etc.)

The DOS installer is in the d:\dos directory on the disk.

Hey, thanks! I found it! I installed, and guessed "MW2SHELL" as the command to run. It got me in. I can set up my own Merc Commander, or Mercenary campaign, but I can't enter any missions or go instant action. Every time I do it exits me out to DOS. This is off topic for this thread, but any ideas on what's going wrong?

Your system may be one of the hundreds which cannot run the 95 version of mech2 without a format... I have long ago given up hope trying to debug what the cause of this problem is.
Please switch to the DOS version mercs which is on your disc. You will have alot less trouble in the end.

You need to mount a cue file in DOSBox. One tool to produce a cue/img pair of your MW2 Mercs CD is CloneCD.

Thanks! I've got it up and running through DOSBOX now. Now I just have to find a way to get my joystick to work right, 'cause I'm awful with the keyboard.
