the game starts fine the sound works, but when i select a mission even pilot training it the screen says mission failed. I used to play this game when i was a kid can anyone help me for old memories?

I am assuming your using the Windows 95 version MechWarrior and have read the install guide.
95 versions are very finicky they either work or do not work. My advice is to go either buy or install a DOS version MechWarrior 2 with DOSBOX.
That will work on Windows 7.

At this time I have never gotten any 95 version to work on Windows 7.
I am sure someone else may have, but I have not had any luck in that area.

Is your version at all like mine, where there is both the windows version AND a dos version? Mine had both.
To find out, go explore your CD drive and run MINST.exe (not _MINST.exe you want the one WITHOUT the underscore)...
If it is either not there or installs win95 or something (I really wouldn't know ) then... you gotta buy a DOS version.

Or download&run MechVM, hit "Install" while the CD is inserted. Then MechVM will identify the CD for you.

already tried the mechvm and this is what i have in my virtual drive for mechwarrior 2, it must be the H.A.L. that the win2000 and above have that inturupts the game from playing properly im doing a win98se install on this pc to see if that will work instead. I found the .iso off the internet and wanted to play with it.
