Sorry to say Cyber Carns this is outta my expertise I never have bothered using a joystick since we switched to dosbox.
hmmm anyone else have any ideas? I know there is a way to map dosbox controls, but it is abit messy and I do not know the button off hand sadly.

I have the same stick. I went through all the possible options on the controls list to see which would work best. Several come close, but the best functionality is with the 2-button joystick (no jumping around or crossed assignments between rudder and throttle). Maybe there's a way we could map the joystick to keyboard controls? I once had an old joystick that could do this...don't know if there's some way to do it with the new one.
BTW, my stick works fine on other DOS games through DOSBOX (ie Wing Commander & Privateer)...not all of the buttons function the way I'd like them to (many duplicates) but the hat, throttle, and rudder all work perfectly so I know DOSBOX doesn't have issues with the stick.

Found a solution. ST290 works beautifully now. I DL'd software from Saitek (Free) to slave keystrokes over to joystick buttons. It's taken some time to figure out throttle and rudder controls, but I'd be happy to share the profile I've set up to jumpstart you.
software can be dl'd here:
http://www.saitek.com/uk/down/drivers2.asp
second link is the software
instructions are here:

Glad I could actually give something useful for the help I've gotten! Thanks guys!
