I just got a mechwarrior 2 vanilla edition "pentium" and read the post, but I couldn't seem to find a solution. I installed my MW 2 and set the compatibility wizard to 95 since the vanilla I got is a 95, when I try to run it I get a black box then instantly disappears. It auto runs and was never used before I installed it on my xp laptop, I don't know what to do now.

this for me got it to start. Also, it got NetMech working ( i think)
BUT for me, the game crashes when you go into ready room, training, or when you try to launch in trials of grievance. (so basically, crashes whenever you try to actually play)
Good luck.

I used that video but I am not sure about the hex editor on the part of where to save and finding a rawer file also stopped me because I didn't know or found the file I needed to transfer to the rawer program I guess it is called.

Simplest solution is to use Slugs Hook, please give that a try.
The Hex editing solution I gave in the video works, but it is not necessary anymore as the hook works better.
However you do still need to mix the
shell dll's from the patch or you will get a mechlab error.
Also, .rar is for WinRar but you can get a free program called
7-zip which can open it.
My best advice, as I give on almost every 95 thread these days, is that the DOS is much more stable.
I would highly suggest that you procure a copy of MechWarrior 2 which has DOS on it or is the DOS version.
This version is probably the best version of MechWarrior 2 which you could buy.

Thanks for the help MMPD Radick , but my computer is a real kick in the pants to work with and for the slug hook
spent some time searching and found a link on a post
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=307&p=1417 adress I think is the right one , but I downloaded it and it asked where the file should be put, I assumed it should go with the MW2 file but couldn't find it / I also tried to set the compatibility to 95 by right clicking the program but it would't allow saying it is a part of windows XP

the hook should be setup in its own directory. Not sure if i understand the rest of your question.

sorry for the bad question but I will clarify the problem : the hook plays out correct until it asked to browse for a folder

That's whats getting me
So far the way I did this is:
1)I installed MW2 megamedia bundle vanilla edition
2)Set windows compatibility wizard
3)tried the game many times with no solution
4)Attemted the hex (the comp. did not approve)
5)watched the youtube MW 2 installation xp guide video over and over
6)downloaded the RAWer file (completly wrong download oops!)
7)write this topic hoping for a solution

the list above shows what the heck I did to troubleshoot this problem

I was looking around, but does programs like VMware or microsoft virtual PC get through this problem or help at all?
the question may seem weird because it came from a complete newbie

*shrugs* It may be easier if I set it up for you via remote desktop. Come by IRC tommarow and I will see what I can do.
Also yes VMWARE does work with the 95 version, but if you have the megamultimedia disc then you actually have DOS on it.
You could just use DOSBOX.

Follow the DOS install guide in the FAQ section. It is much easier to deal with than 95.

It seems a bit long, but I was just rolling around and worked through some things. I got IRC (a bit late) using the java IRC onthis site,I also watched another installation guide on youtube link:

Nice Job
I downloaded dosbox (I'm a bit clueless but nothing I can't handle)
along with slug's patch, but it says directory that contains MW2.DLL
The browse for folders is from the desktop,My computer area
for now I will just try to from what I can find and try to solve this problem
