So are gauss rifles doing better damage now (i.e., in Dosbox)? Although I never remember them being that powerful even in single player a decade ago.

this is just like autocannons. IMO those are really lame compared of what they should do.
It's not for nothing if a 'mech sporting an AC/20 or a Gauss Rifle is generaly the first being targeted in CBT.
AC/20 can easily cripple a 'mech (20 damage plus a piloting roll to do) and it's terrific when you have an ultra AC20 (2 shell at 20 damages... 40 damage => ouch !)
That's nearly the same with gauss rifle (especialy heavy gauss) but at longer range. Just imagine the effect of a cockpit hit with a gauss rifle...
MW2 always had problem representing this.

I will have to disagree with your opinion on AC's, I always try and target those mechs first because those mechs as you said are usually the most powerful.

Yeah but, despite the rules entorse (any AC can fire continously... what a joke !) just imagine how many damage you would deal with 20 shells fired with 20 damages each. I did that in solo, and my foe was destroyed after my ammo bin was empty (and I aimed the central torso)... Also lower ACs continuous fire doesn't as much damage as it should (I threw 100 AC5 shells at an enemy's face without killing it).
This game has several problem with weapon balancing. Justlike pulse lasers overheating too much OR firing to often for a low damage rates compared to original CBT rates.

this aint CBT. the rules just dont transfer to realtime well. also, everytime to roll in CBT, it is random(to a certain extent.) i dont fo firing randomly in the air

no but in some ways, MW2 is the best representation of CBT rules, despite 'mech falls aren't represented. And as I said, damage synchronisation and weapon cooldown still represent the worse points of this game.
