The good news is I have MW2 mercs running. The problem is that there is no sound in missions or menus.

My system is
Win XP SP3
1024MB RAM
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 3800+ MMX 3dnow
ATI Radeon HD 5450
Sound blaster audigy

Which version are you running? Mercs dos requires you to run setsound.bat in order to get sound.

I am not sure. Is there a file on the CD that I can find the version?

i experience that problem too on mechwarrior 2 mercs plantium (titanium bp graphics)
on your cd it chould tell you example: DOS,ibm,cdmrom,enhanced3d and many others
most ppl use the lowest letter drives to get sound and music and it works but for some people it wont work

well yeah the CD music would be usually loaded from the lowest drive, but no sounds though is slightly different as it is usually just a setting.
I echo though Demonslayer on the rest of it though.

Another way to find out whether you are using DOS or not is to see if you are using DOSBOX. If dosbox loads then it is DOS.

On the left side of the CD it says:

I am assuming I have version 1.05.

Yes, but mercs comes with two versions on that disc version.
95/DOS. By default the game installs both of those on the drive when you run the installer on XP.
(I am assuming you skipped mechvm since you don't need it on XP)

Do you see a Windows application when you launch or DOS?

Which exe do you use to launch? MERCS.EXE is DOS and MERCSWIN.EXE is windows.

I was using MERCS.EXE and MERCSWIN.EXE works also, but with sound.

yeah then for mercs.exe just simply run setsound.bat and run the configuration and you will have sound.
