Heat is also transported by photons (=light), which is why flames are visible. While a fire needs oxygen to exist, heat transfer by photons would also work in space, but the heat sinks would best be mounted near or on the inside of the armor.
As for the laser beams ... from my perspective, MW2 certainly got it wrong (talk about light speed), but MW3 isn't necessarily more realistic. Normally, unless you look straight into the beam, the beam is invisible (and I'm not suggesting that you try to look into the beam). Light only scatters off dust and other particles in the air. However, if you interpret the lasers in MW2 as laser-heated bolts of matter, they would be affected by gravity and aerodynamics, even more so at their slow rate of movement, in addition to requiring ammo. But I doubt I'd get any votes for invisible lasers...

That is true in most cases you will not see a laser unless you got allot of smoke and dust in the air (or fog... the list goes on). It is one of those laws of physics that all video game designers look over as well as ignore, given the actual facts it is rather lame to have invisible lasers.
I do believe that if they were intense enough they could super-heat atmosphere which would make a visible 'beam' of plasma. In fact this is how the 'laser' version of the fusion reactor works, they use lasers to super-heat water turning it into oxygen and hydrogen plasma, the plasma is them magnetically transferred to a 'combustion' chamber ware the actual fusion process takes place. This plasma is also what fuels the Jump-Jets and Flamers (BattleMech Flamers). here is an image that another guy made up for the Sans Peur project to visually depict the fusion engine and JJs of a mech. I believe the concept was to introduce H20 to the plasma and this would create a sort of an explosion you could use to propel the mech with using your JJs. Here is also anotehr pic of a topic we discussed in the Sans Peur project, having one of the MFD panel screens show the reactor's status and details (you would be able to see what was going on when ou took an engine hit).
This is also the same case with the particle beam, I was discussing this with my science teacher Earth's atmosphere is not even close to being dense enough to see the actual beam. However with enough dust particles and such you would be able to see it. (Once again i am not so sure
Blah!!! I completely forgot about Laser HeatSinks, that is right they converted the heat energy into light energy. However this is only a concept that the clans came out with and was compatible only with their mechs. I believe the Inner Sphere did developed them later on, it would be like 3067 era or beyond if they did. The disadvantages to them is at night time

you were a prime target.
You know what is sad is i made a fan-fic weapon based on Laser HeatSinks, in the next weapons phase you could use the light generated by your current heat level to produce a weapons scale laser. Also by firing this weapon it would also reduce the existing heat level. if i remember right they were mainly placed on the rear of the mech too. I called it the "HADS" or "Heat Amplification Displacement System". I am starting to feel like a real ass for forgetting about Laser HeatSinks now. LOL

lasers are alot like oxygen acetylene torches
the metal will get hot, and then the photons (like the propeled burning gas) will "blow" that metal out of it's way when it melts
this just happens much faster with laser
same concept
both are a way to cause atoms to vibrate turning it into a liquid, and then if hot enough gas, and then on to plasma. it just depends on how much energy you put into heating up those atoms, and how densely those atoms are packed.
this vid shows the effect very well
