Nothing like "I am your father" to make people aware of a back story ...

well they could just go with the clan invasion
just straight battles and go back and forth on how each side is handling the fight
dont really need to get into the background of why the clans are invading the houses, just have it action packed
then when people want to know more about it, they can just read the books
I think the way Dune was made is a good example of how not to do a movie. I was just bored to tears about all the stuff going on in Dune

If any of you have watched Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I think if there were to be a movie made about a battletech story, they would have to do what LOTR did; by starting out with a 6 minute or so introduction about the history and how things are and why they are.
That way people can think to themselves "oh! I get this now. This seems like this will be a great story!".

I thought the 1st LoTR movie was good, but not so much action. Which is ok, since the next movie, and especially the 3rd movie, had epic battles.
There was nothing more adrenaline pumping than seeing the Riders of Rohan, on that hill (in the 3rd movie), and charging valiantly into the orcs.
Truely Epic moment.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like it. In that case, there's little point in recommending the books to you, is there?

I like the way "Matrix" started by luring us into the action without explaining everything right away. A film on the Clan invasion might as well start on "The Rock" with Mech action and a commander yelling into radio "Base, we are under attack by unknown forces fielding unknown, superior technology", followed by some explosions ... speculations on an alien invasion ... examination of dead elementals showing strangely large humans .. until finally the truth about the origins of the Clans is revealed. And in Lord of the Rings, much of the story about the ring was revealed later, through Gandalf's studies. Not telling the full truth at the start is a wonderful storytelling tool.

I think an intro like MW3 would be good as a battletech movie intro. In the smoke of war a voice goes on to say;
"...Piloting these awesome weapons of war are the men and women, the elite of the elite, knowing each battle could be thier last. They are, Mechwarriors."
And then the voice fades away to reviel the sounds of a lossing battle, com channels filled with pleas for military reinforcments and medical aid... the smoke rolls away to show a war-torn city with fleeing straglers...

a great picture to start with, wouldn't you agree?

actually the MW3 Intro was the best out of the series, IMO.
