Mercs: '95 Blue backdrop of death, or DOS rainbowmode.

Post by Datum »

First things first:
1.) Windows XP
2.) 1.1 on the '95 version
3.) Kontza's method
4.) Installed through windows
4b.) I think that video was for the original MW2...
5.) Installed 1.1 patch, and Kontza's patch.

Anyways, It works in both windows and dos, but marginally so.
In XP there are no graphics other than the cockpit and some shadows, and no sounds except for the music.
In Dos, all the colors are messed up, regardless of its compatibility settings, and the missions only worked in the lowest resolution without being rainbowed. Recently it crashed, and now neither cinematics nor gameplay show anything other than a black screen.
Any ideas?

What do you get it if you set it up without the 1.1 patch? You can test this quickly using MechVM, because it will patch Mercs for XP compatibility. Also, the 1.1 patch does not work with DOS. The last patch supporting DOS is 1.06.

Rainbow mode is caused by you graphics card.. you probably have a semi new ATI card my bet...
There is no fix for running it directly. You should try running it in DOSBOX as it will fix it.
Take Skyfallers advice and try mechvm as the new version will preinstall it into DOSBOX.

As for the 1.1 patch... I would advise you to stick with 1.06 in the 95 version because the 1.1 is a plain mess in any os other than 98/95/ME.

Well, I just said "Screw it", and reinstalled, so now I'm back at square 2 with only the 1.05 and 1.06 patches in effect.
What next?

They're both installed simultaneously from the beginning, I think...
I installed it through '95 if that makes any difference...

Let me throw my 2 cents in as I have this game and had it since it first came out. DOS and win 95 are both different versions. One will not work on the other. This is due to back in the day some of us, including me, was still running windows 3.11. I was forced to upgrade to Win 95 due to the MW2 mercs patch 1.13 in order to get dynamic salvage. It was 75% worth it since it still had bugs. SO what version you plan on using matters.
