The point of this thread is to purpose possible explanations of file types utilized by MW2 and verify them. The practical utility of documenting this is that new content can be created for MW2 and old content can be altered or integrated into new Engines and projects.
This should aid us in proper identification: the file format listing on Wikipedia.
AIT/.AIT - Adobe Illustrator Templates
ANIM/.3DI - Some sort of 3d Animation file format likely related to the early Bryce suite.
ARCH/ N/A -
BWD/.BWD - Unknown.
CEL/ .TEX & .XEL - Perhaps the texturing format in line with the Texel concept? TEX datasheet format? TeX formating language file format?
CPIT/ .CPI - Perhaps related to the Cartesian Perceptual Compression format? ColorLab Processed Image bitmapped graphics file?
DISP/ .DLL - This one is a known File Type, but what does this DLL do?
FONT/ .FNT - Font files for console and game text.
GIF/ .GIF - Graphic Interchange Format
HUD/ .HDI -
LUMA/ .TBL - Short for Table used by many programs. Aldus TableEditor file: TableEditor. Gate3 table file. Graphics file (native format): PageMaker TableEditor. Table of values: OS/2
MEK/ .MEK & ??? - Mech description file format and a file which shows up as the euro with no extension type.
MENU/ .DLL - This one is a known File Type, but what do the DLLs do?
MGEO/ .MGI - Likely a mission geometry file format. Likely related to the Bryce suite.
MTAB/ .MTB -
MUS/ .MUS - Finale music document.
MWK/ .MEK - [See Above]
NTXT/ .TXT - Text files. Contains info about the table building for Mechs and Appears to define the number of Mechtypes and their Tonnage. Includes game Credits and some sorta mission dialog.
PAL/ .COL - COLor pallet for the audodesk animator (adobe) file format.
PCX/ .PCX - PC Paintbrush Exchange. Appears to contain common interface graphics for the NETMECH client or server.
POLY/ .WTB -
SHP/ .SHP - Shape file and source file for text fonts: AutoCAD
SNDS/ .SFL & .WAV - PCL 4 bitmap font landscape: Intellifont - Ventura Publisher and Waveform Audio Format. Appears to be MW2 sound effects.
TABL/ .TBL & .PIC - TBL appears to be a preprocessor format from unix. [See Above]. The
PIC may be a Polymorphic Inline Cache. It is doubtful due to size and composition that it is a Pictor Picture format.
TEXT/ .XXT - Perhaps a Proprietary text format?
XMID/ .XMI - Compressed eXtended MIdi music
XYC/ .XYC & .RLE - Perhaps the XYC refers to Rotation Matrix? The Utah Run Length Encoded rasterfile graphic file: SDSC Image Tool would seem to refer to Run Length Encoding.
This is what I found by nosing around Wikipedia, and it is all I am willing to speculate/investigate on this early in the morning. I hope even a quarter of my guesses are in the ball park.

Re: Project Verify Format
BWD: These are *Binary *W*orld *F*iles. They describe and connect pretty much the entire sim.
CPIT: Cockpits?
WTB: Polygons for Mechs, mountains, vehicles, buildings.
MGEO/MGI: Don't know. Might be related to mapping texture to geometry, but might be worthwhile to take a closer look
MUS: I think these are just links to the music tracks on the CDs
XYC: Don't know.

Re: Project Verify Format
According to a mercs document made by J.J.Franzen in '96, the .MGI format is a special format that arranges a series of rectangles to form the cockpits interior frame.
