I'm not all for ending F22 production to replace our aging F15/16/18s

You are talking about the F-22 Raptor stealth bomber-fighter, right? And where is the article?

It seems to be part of Robert Gates' proposal to save on military hardware in the US.

The article says that no more than 187 F-22 are to be produced, but it also mentions that production of the F-35 is to be sped up.

I agree that the Raptor is expensive and is not ideal for this type of war, but I am not convinced that justifies production to halt entierly.

I think one thing people are missing here is that technology may be evolving, but pilots can still make or break any plane. A good pilot can make an antiquated or obsolete plane a deadly weapon, while an inexperienced pilot can make a technological marvel a flying pile of scrap. If they do eventually decide to end production of the F22 it will be a sad loss of a mission SPECIFIC plane. Personally I'd love to see the development of a low orbit supra-range fighter (atains a low orbit fuel saving altitude, cruises to desired "hotspot" and reneters atmosphere) If you could have a stealthed craft in orbit between the troposphere and lowest satelite orbital trajectories, it would be a helluva vehicle. But I tend to be a dreamer, so i look less at what we have now and had in the past, and what we might be able to produce in the future.
