Tactical Mecha Games

Post by Lag King »

Here is a pic of Titans of Steel a tactical strategy game. The game is loosely based on Mechforce for the Amiga according to the
author. Never Played Mechforce so I can't compare them.

I will update this when I get to play more.

download the game

http://www.acid-play.com/download/titans-of-steel/

P.S. I haven't played much so if you trouble figuring out the game (read the documentation) don't ask me how to play.

Found a bug in the TOS control center (TCC.EXE). When using the game modules (battle,factory, hq) the programs will stay open when you exit them (until you close TCC). IF you use the module a new window be open,but the previous sessions well remain in memory,not a serious problem since the game doesn't use much ram, still recommend making shortcuts to each of the three modules.

Modules
battle*.exe The main game in full screen
factory*.exe Make and Customize Titans
hq*.exe Customize Teams - release Titan Pilots from Prison (hiring), customize pilots,buy\Sell
Titans,and Allocate Titans.
*come in W and X flavor
W = windows mode
X = directx fullscreen

These files are located in the progs the folder under your Titans of Steel install path (EG. C:\Steel Titans)

Is this "ToS:Warring Suns" that Matrix just released for free a few months ago, or the older version?

I've loaded both but never really played either, as I've never figured out how to work the interface. I keep meaning to read the manual, but I lose interest. I'll have to try again sometime. From what little I've seen of WS, it has a tutorial mode at least (if I recall correctly).

Edit: Sorry, I didn't read closely enough. This is the older version, now that I see your link. If you like that, check out this -- http://www.matrixgames.com/news.asp?nid=484 .

Yes, this the original freeware version (latest 1.4) release by Vicious Bytes. However the Commercial (Warring Suns) has been release for free download.

Please note the size different.

Titans of Steel - about 8.5 mb
Warring Suns - almost 300 mb

Haven't played Warring Suns yet but since it's commercial I suspect that it will be of higher quality then the original.
Still the original is still worth the download, especially since it's quite small download.

None of the Warring Suns download links seem to support resume (despite what my download manager says), so dial up users might be at a loss.

Good point about the program sizes.

I made my way through the tutorial of WS, created a squad and bought some units in the HQ module, and then started a rookie campaign.

One of the AI player's Titans missed its piloting roll in the water and fell down. This happened to another soon afterwards next to that info screen in the picture above. Regrettably, in this good tactical situation, the program then crashed... Maybe the auto-save is ok though. (Edit: It was.)

All in all, not bad. It seems fairly tedious though and suffers from the typical Battletech syndrome where green pilots take a very long time to do anything successfully... like put significant damage on the target.

Trouble in the Water :lol:, this happened to me a lot in Mech War (someday I will post images of this game when I have a chance to play again); That's why I prefer staying out of the water. Also be careful when jumping when hidden in forests, I've missed rolls causing my TOS to plummet into the ground :oops: .

I forgot to post what happened in the screens.
The victory.jpg is my first victory in TOS. One of my Titans (pictured blue) managed to cripple one of enemy's TOS. Not shown is one of my artillery TOS firing weapons from safe distance. Also I have a recon unit sweeping in from south east. I managed to kill the crippled mech and disable the other enemy TOS (not shown). My pilots were set a champion starting rank and the enemy at rookie, so I had the upper hand to begin with. The picture label TOS0001.JPG is screen from Tutorial mission (tutorial from the html manual in the docs folder), in this battle the enemy manged to cripple all my Titans pretty bad. This mission ended in failure, though I can't complain since it was my first session and I was just learning the basics.

If you don't want to bother building up your own characters you can choose a random team and set the starting rank to your preference. These types of teams can only be used for one game. The main weakness to this is that pilots (+skills) and Titans (+weapons\equipment) is chosen for you. Still this nice way to get your feet wet or just quick way to get into the game.

Can you create maps in the original TOS? On map selection screen you have the options to load a map but the game isn't supplied with any maps nor have I've found any on the net. You can still have a map randomize for you based on your settings (you can choose the terrain type, amount of water,amount of cliffs,amount roads,and the map size).

Here is another battle, this time 4 on 4. I still started with champs and ai with rookies. I managed to defeat the other team but after being forced to eject 2 pilots. The scout (Mosquito) was ambushed while on ledge, after taking some damaged I decided to eject the pilot, but not without dfa-ing one of the enemy Titans :mrgreen: causing significant damage to both titans. Later in the battle I became over confident and charged in with one of my assault units(Rifleman). Unfortunately the pilot missed his skill check when landing from a jump and tumbled over :x . I managed to DFA another enemy titan before ejecting the pilot to safety. Both of my Scorpion (medium sized titan) and my Ancient Mariner (Assault sized titan) managed to survived battle with minimal damage. Not the best strategy but the main point of this battle was to try to successfully pull off a DFA and try to call shots. Sadly I haven't quiet figured out how to call shots. :?:

The next battle was 2 on 3. Not much to say about this battle, I pretty much attack the enemy titans from high ground. My light Titans took quite a beating but managed to survive the whole battle, even suffer some heavy damage from internal ammo explosion from over heat. Interestingly the ai had hard time passing their skill checks for movement and often were tumbling over :roll: .
