They (the MW series) are all just games. :)

When it comes to things like games, it's frequently just a matter of taste. The MW series games are just diversions, afterall, whether we call them "sims" or "first person shooters".

In all likelihood, we'll never see a commercial game quite like MW2 again because it came out at a unique time in PC and PC gaming history. Flight sims were still the top end of the game technology demonstrator software in 1995. Besides Descent, a true 3D mainstream FPS hadn't come out yet (Quake) and the best FPSes were still "2.5D" -- 3D levels with 2D sprites. Repomancer himself says that he came from a professional flight sim background, so his very flight-sim-ish engine hit the market at just the right time, right when computers were becoming fast enough to render the more detailed 3D environments necessary for depicting ground combat in an exciting way, and just as consumer-level 3D cards were starting to proliferate.

MW3 is probably more a continuing development, going with the flow of the industry. Good use of 3D acceleration, etc.

MW4, with its multiplayer focus, perhaps was a sign of rapidly growing broadband internet access. Multiplayer was and is the thing that was growing, so it made sense to target it.

So, I guess they all fit into their respective times and offer different things. I still think MW2 > MW3 > MW4, though this is probably a matter of taste. Who knows, maybe MW5 (if it ever happens) could be even better than MW2. It's possible, at least.

Heavy Gear 1, on the other hand, looks cool but the MW2 game engine just isn't suited to the subject. It needs a more FPS-like engine :) (which Activision later did for HG2).

You can move sideways (sort of -- it auto-pivots, runs, then pivots back), go prone, do melee combat, etc. in HG2 --

MW4 goes against our defined game play of fast brutal and in your face.

MW4 Is mostly Attrition battle when there are two teams that are pretty good. Small mechs get toasts so fast and only serve as recon cannon fodder Med mechs are more commonly seen with Large lasers and jumping up and sniping. Large mechs are usually just sniping with big weapons as they are god aweful slow.

Mw2 Is mostly fast Med to close range combat with fast attacking weapons and mech that are quite nimble even the heavy ones. MW2 is a simulator In its feel and look. It can be defined as a FPS as well only because its Not a RTS or a text dos box adventure hehe. its a simple point and shoot while dodging. Most people see a simulator as a Flight sim Very techincal and alot of realism making them only for the top notch. A racing game could be considered a simulator but isnt because its realism is lacking.

MW4 has more of a FPS feel because of its UI
MW2 feels more like a simulator because it take a little bit of work to acutally kill any one. Lag shooting what a dream.

just because your driving a giant robot around doesnt not make it a FPS and it doesnt mean it a sim either. But there both not a RTS :P

Just a product or changing game styles with the age of computers and consoles having to work together.

More Pics

I agree MW4 doesn't quite feel the same of the MW games but as fps, I don't know, it felt more a simplified sim game for the arcade to me. Regardless both MW4 and MW2 have their ups and downs. Jumping jetting is better in MW2, While I prefer the ground combat in MW4. MW4 has takes more advantage of the terrain, more hills for sniping, you can destroy objects to raise the enemies heat or jump into a lake to cool down your mech. The flush coolant idea is kinda weird useful but weird, not sure if it belongs in a MW game. As for the HG, I differently say the Dark engine used HG2 is awesome, but ai can be murder at times.
Couldn't they add a difficulty setting. Regardless I love HG2 especially the gear lab which is superior to the mechlab used in the MW series. Anyhow heres some more screenies.
