This being the screenshots forum, screenshots are a great thing to show, especially ones that are on-topic for this site. Here's HG1, one of the last Warthink engine games, as far as I know. (I76, I82?, Battlezone1, I think are the only newer ones? I haven't played any of them; maybe I82 used a different engine since it came out later? Edit: It did, it used the HG2 engine.)
HG1 (unpatched) works fine for me on WinXP SP2 even in D3D mode. I have a GF4 Ti4200 (a decent card 6 years ago when I got it), so maybe it still has some compatibility built into it.
Note the return of the wireframe enhanced vision mode that was removed/partially implemented in the Mercs engine games (Mercs, Titanium, Battlepack). The screenshots save as tga files, which look significantly better than these JPG versions I've posted here. All in all, I'm slightly shocked that HG1 works better on my system than HG2. (HG2 is newer and uses a different engine.)

Re: Heavy Gear 1
Apparently only D3D mode saves as tga. Software mode saves as gif still.

James 3:5-10: My Reminder
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

I'm really not sure why this works fine in WinXP with no fixes, but it does. It came out in late 1997 ( http://www.dp9.com/Worlds/HG.htm ), presumably not long after Titanium MW2 (also '97? according to Wikipedia).
